The Animal Crimes Unit comprises sworn deputies responsible for safeguarding the health and well-being of Buncombe County’s community and domestic animals. They also assist in all Sheriff’s Office functions.

Major Duties include

Responding to calls about dangerous animals.

Documenting animal bites and overseeing the rabies protocol in coordination with the Buncombe County Health Department.

Investigating reports of animal cruelty and neglect.

Dispatching injured wildlife (e.g., wildlife hit by cars)

The Buncombe County Animal Shelter provides immediate and personalized solutions and resources for any issue concerning a Buncombe County animal. By focusing on sheltering animals within the community, we aim to increase reunification rates and keep animals in loving homes. Shelter services include lost and found services, rabies vaccines, rehoming resources, one-on-one retention counseling, and end-of-life services. Shelter services are available Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and animal intake is available Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
